Inspired by the theme "Museum of Lost Things," this piece honors the legendary Okageinu—the faithful dogs of Edo-period Japan that embarked on sacred pilgrimages to Ise Shrine on behalf of their owners.
During the Edo era, a pilgrimage to Ise Shrine was a month-long journey spanning over 300 miles on foot. When owners were physically unable to make the trek, they entrusted their devotion to their loyal dogs. Bearing a small pouch with travel funds and an official pass, these dogs traveled across the country. Guided by the warmth and collective benevolence of strangers along the road—who cared for, fed, and protected them without harm—they successfully completed their sacred mission.
Though the tradition of the Okageinu has faded into history, this artwork serves as a reminder of that lost era: a celebration of unconditional loyalty, deep cross-species trust, and the enduring kindness of the human spirit.
